When Planning Becomes Procrastination

Procrastination – putting off or delaying an (usually something we don’t want to do) action until a later time.

How It Started…

Have you ever found yourself elbows deep in planning to make lifestyle changes like a career change, planning to travel, planning to turn your hobby into a profitable business? How many times have you told yourself you just need this one thing to get started. Or that you have to look at your schedule and move some things around to make it all work out? How many times did you write out your plan and rewrite it again?

Yeah…me too.

This blog had many names before Reflections 11:11. It had many themes, many beginnings before they all reached their inevitable ends.

A Proper Goal Planning Introduction

I’ll touch more deeply on this later this week but the best place to start for proper goal planning is discovering your purpose.

I’m not talking about your passion. Passion can fade away. I’m talking about discovering your reason why. The real reason why.

Procrastination usually happens when something we don’t want to do needs to get done. But who told you that you need to turn your small hobby into full-time hustle? Or that because you enjoy doing your hair and makeup you should turn it into content? Or that since you are such a good cook you go to culinary school? Was that your idea? Or was it someone else’s.

Whether it was your idea or not, before you dive headfirst into opening your five-star restaurant, there are a few things that you need to do:

  1. STOP letting other people run YOUR life
  2. Decide what YOU want
  3. BELIEVE you are capable of achieving your goals
  4. WRITE down your goals
  5. Learn how to stay MOTIVATED
  6. Make a real PLAN

(more on this list later)

A good sign that I am procrastinating is when I finish a task and I think “I could have done this last week.” That’s when I know that what I called myself planning for, I have little to no interest in doing.

There might be times when there is something that I really want to do but for whatever reason I can’t seem to get out of the planning phase, but that’s another topic for another day.

Until then remember,

The choice is always yours!
